How to Change Tick Speed in Minecraft

How to Change Tick Speed in Minecraft

If you are one of those Minecraft gamers who’ve been always looking for a way to change tick speed in Minecraft but didn’t know how, then you’ve come to the right place. Here we explain how to set different numbers using the gamerule command.

Gamerule command is a tricky way to modify different settings of Minecraft which aren’t accessible through normal settings.

There are various values and settings which could be set and changed using this technique, but our focus here is changing Minecraft tick speed.

Please note that ‘random tick speed’ is the only thing about tick speed which could be changed in the game. Although it affects the block random ticks – i.e. block numbers selected randomly per chunk – you couldn’t do much about the actual value of ticks per second in Minecraft, which has been set to 20.

Tick speed command

It’s one of the easiest ways to increase – or decrease, depending on your goal – tick speed in Minecraft.

There’s just one little catch. The cheats should have been enabled in the game in order for this trick to work. If that’s the case you could restfully read the rest of this section to try it for your game.

The command is very simple, just needing one parameter and that’s the speed, with maximum number being 250 and the minimum 40.

The command for tick speed is like the following:

/gamerule randomTickSpeed 100

In case you want the random ticks to be disabled altogether enter ‘0’ for this number.

Both Bedrock and Java Editions support this method.

Using this method you could change the speed for various items behavior in the game – such as leaf decay, plant growth, etc.

randomTickSpeed default

Depending on the edition which you play the game, there are two default numbers for randomTickSpeed.

The default value for this gamerule is one, if playing on Minecraft Bedrock Edition.

So, unfortunately, other than entirely disabling random ticks you have no other choice – if your intention is slowing down the game.

On the other hand, with ‘3’ being the default value in Minecraft Java Edition, you could always set the game tick speed slower by changing the number to one or two – or zero in order to disable it.
