Why RedMagic’s Gaming Smartphone is Great
Better gaming smartphones are created every year, but RedMagic’s newest contender stands out among this year’s releases. From powerful hardware to built-in gaming features, here’s everything you need to know about the RedMagic 5S and why it’s one of the best gaming smartphones you can get in 2020.
A tiny supercomputer
Nubia Technology’s RedMagic 5S was revealed last July and eventually released in early September. It prides itself on one thing: tiny, computer-level hardware. Not only is the smartphone running on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G chip with Kryo 585 cores, but it also features an AMOLED display and refresh rates of up to 144hz. Powerful parts like these are a bit difficult to integrate into smaller devices. However, manufacturers were able to properly align the pieces by taking advantage of dxf formatting — a type of modern PCB design solution that automates part of the graphical interface layout. As such, they didn’t need to think about the basics of every component’s integration and just focused on delivering the power needed to make them work.
However, that much power is going to produce a lot of heat as the phone does basic processes. Fortunately, RedMagic topped off the 5S design with a centrifugal fan with speeds of 15,000 RPM to keep the system cool. There’s even a cooling graphite thermal pad, ICE 4.0 liquid cooling pipe, thermal gel, and thermal conductivity copper, so users can be sure that every part is operating at maximum efficiency.
Other gaming features
The smartphone comes with a minimum RAM of 8 GB—which should be the average for a mid-range gaming computer. Since mobile games don’t require as many resources as PC ones, you will rarely encounter lag, loading screens, nor pixelated displays in any titles. The RedMagic 5S also has a pair of surround speakers, making games sound good even without headphones.
Furthermore, the device is pre-installed with Game Space—a custom launcher that helps boost gameplay. It does this by optimizing the device’s memory to allocate more for the software you’re launching. Finally, the RedMagic 5S has a built-in software feature called “Touch Choreographer.” When turned on, it automatically adjusts the game’s frame rate to make sure that it never stutters.
Price
Because of all the complex hardware, you might think that a RedMagic 5S is out of your price range. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. This smartphone retailed at $597 for the base silver model. This model already contains 8 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage. You can upgrade to the “Pulse” model, which touts 12 GB RAM and 256 GB internal storage. Pulse has a similar color scheme to the Nintendo Switch (blue and red).
With mobile games with PC-like graphics such as Genshin Impact and Call of Duty: Mobile circulating in the mobile market, you will need a capable smartphone to run them. The RedMagic 5S’s tiny but powerful hardware and affordable price range make it the best option for mobile gaming.
